According
to the Center for Disease
Control (CDC), one in 11 students report at least one incident of
physical
violence in a dating relationship each year. The statistic includes
both boys
and girls between the ninth and 12th grades. Eight percent
of boys
and 9 percent of girls have been to an emergency room because of dating
abuse.
When
denial is added to
these statistics, the risk factor goes up. LBGT youth in abusive
relationships appear to be unaware of the serious
consequences abuse holds for them. This fact was highlighted when
a group of
lesbian,
bisexual, gay, and transgender (LBGT) youth said they believed same-sex
relationship abuse was not as serious as opposite-sex abuse. Read
the entire article.
In an effort to raise awareness of
this issue, Barb Chandler has written Outing Relationship
Abuse: A Primer for LBGT Youth. The goals of this book are to:
inform young people
about
abusive relationships; empower them to help themselves; and
instruct them how to have healthy
relationships.
